Queer Characters In My Stories
Jun. 19th, 2022 07:46 pmSince
plutodetective told me about #PrideWriMo, I thought about doing some prompts, but there really isn't any queer rep in my current WIP (RIP...). And that got me interested in making a list of all the queer characters I've ever created, even the cringey, poorly-written ones from when I was too young to write such characters with the proper nuance. I'm also going to include OCs from fanfics because some of my strongest queer characters have been created for fics, tbh.
Stories From 2009-2011:
Lacey Darwin/Lacerta Drovadoria (Star-Crossed & Fair/bisexual)
Dorothy Applegate (Star-Crossed & Fair/lesbian)
Grus (Star-Crossed & Fair/gay)
Alexis Dare (Fair/lesbian)
Stories From 2013-2016:
Arianna Turner (Fortean Falls & Dare to Be Happy/non-binary)
Morven (Fortean Falls & Dare to Be Happy/asexual)
Lilith Brand (Fortean Falls & Dare to Be Happy/bisexual)
Brian Syme (Dare to Be Happy/pansexual)
Wiley (Dare to Be Happy/non-binary)
Malina Finch (Green Finch & Linnet Bird/bisexual)
Kevin Finch (Green Finch & Linnet Bird/asexual)
Jessica Edden (Green Finch & Linnet Bird/lesbian)
Pierce Sabani (Green Finch & Linnet Bird/transgender)
Stories From 2018-Now:
Tess Tilson (The Longest Train/aromantic asexual)
Jay Keyes (The Longest Train/bisexual)
Rod Gallagher (The Longest Train/bisexual)
Skyler Steele (Never Heard That One Before/bisexual)
Russ Park (Never Heard That One Before/bisexual)
And there might be more queer characters in NHTOB, but I haven't fleshed out that story very much yet (I've written a chapter and a half and there will be more eventually. Would love to make a post about it sometime!).
From My Fics:
Noel Bryden (Prelude to Knighthood & As the Shining Light/aromantic asexual)
Sara Radner (Welcome to the Jungle/aspec lesbian)
Tamanna Sahni (Welcome to the Jungle/bisexual)
Leigh Radner (Welcome to the Jungle/lesbian)
Surprisingly, I've only written three stories where the main couple is a same-sex couple- Star-Crossed (and they break up), The Longest Train (and one of them doesn't appear much in the story), and Welcome to the Jungle (and one of them is a character from another work, since it is a fanfic). Writing this list has also made me realize that I have an interesting habit of putting bisexual characters in straight relationships, which of course doesn't invalidate their bisexuality at all, but I feel like I've been shying away from properly exploring a same-sex relationship in my writing. There are... many reasons for that and I hope that one day, I'll feel comfortable enough to write a good same-sex romance. For some reason it comes so much more easily to me if I write about ships than my OCs, and I have no idea why that is.
