So I've seen Sparks' more experimental music (Lil' Beethoven, Hello Young Lovers, Annette) frequently get compared to an opera composer named John Adams, and tonight I was reading an old interview with Sparks where they mentioned a John Adams piece that they found inspiring, so I just went to listen to it and WOW I now see EXACTLY where all those unusual song structures came from.
