Aug. 17th, 2021 09:24 pmI will never forget the first time I heard this song.
I was scrolling idly through tumblr, as one does. One of my followers had reblogged a music video, and I was about to scroll on by because I'd never heard of the band- "FFS." Then, I saw how she had tagged it. "Franz Ferdinand" was one of the tags. And "Sparks" was another. What the what??? Franz Ferdinand, as in the band I loved for a few years back in high school, the band who made such classic songs as "Take Me Out," "Jacqueline," "Lucid Dreams," "No You Girls" just to name a few I love... And Sparks, as in the band my dad praises to the ends of the earth? They're still around? They're still ALIVE? They collaborated with Franz Ferdinand???
Naturally I had to click on the video, and when it opened in another tab, I was greeted with some heartstring-tugging piano chords and Alex Kapranos' smooth, dreamy voice. Yep, that was Franz Ferdinand all right. But then... magic happened. A drumbeat came in, as did Russell Mael's vocals- equally smooth and dreamy, but possessing that fun, quirky, indescribable quality that I recognized from the records my dad had played around the house. I sat there stunned... "OH." This is, in fact, a collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Sparks. And then... the chorus hit. MY GOD!!!!!!
That's how I discovered one of my favorite songs in the world. Immediately after I heard it, I had to send my dad an email informing him that his favorite band had collaborated with one of his other favorite bands (he sent me a reply saying he already knew). Since then, I've had the pleasure of playing this song for my best friend, and she said the exact same thing I thought when the chorus came in- "What genre even is this?!" What I wanted to tell her was "it's Sparks!," but more accurately, it's FFS. She's gotten into the song now and whenever she plays it, we harmonize on the chorus (I take Russell's part, she takes Alex's). And to this day, I LONG desperately for a new album, although considering the trajectories of both bands (Sparks are busying themselves in the world of cinema, Franz Ferdinand underwent a major lineup change a few years back), I don't think it will ever happen. Even though I wish it would.
