(no subject)
May. 28th, 2019 08:08 pm I'm two episodes into the new Catch-22 adaptation on Hulu, and here are some things I really hope they preserve from the book that they haven't shown (yet?):
-The nightmarish scene with Aarfy bothering Yossarian in the nose of the plane
-The other nightmarish scene of Yossarian wandering around Rome, witnessing all of its decay and hopelessness
-"Ou sont les Neigeden d'antans?"
-"I SEE EVERYTHING TWICE!" and the heartbreaking moment it leads into
-Milo Minderbinder being the scummiest, slimiest snake to ever live. I'm not overly satisfied right now with his portrayal thus far. He seems more like an ambitious young suck-up than the total scumball he was in the book. (He and Aarfy both seem too young for the parts, too, though I'm not sure why I assumed they were older than the others.)
-The ending in all its glory
Things I am disappointed with so far:
-Cutting out the backstory of how Nately's whore fell for him (though I am glad they gave her a name: Carina)
-The Snowden backstory has not been referred to beyond the brief opening scene. If it were up to me, I'd have a flashback in every episode, getting longer each time until the entire story is revealed. There's only 6 episodes, it shouldn't be hard to build up to.
-Yossarian being repeatedly referred to, and referring to himself, as Yoyo. As far as I recall, his "roomies" who moved in after Orr's disappearance were the only ones in the book who called him that.
-Extremely minor detail that shouldn't bother me nearly as much as it does, but in the beginning when Yossarian hooked up with Scheisskofp's (sp?) wife, she wasn't shown wearing his dog tags as it mentioned in the book. I just thought that detail was sexy and would have liked to see it.
-Yossarian doesn't seem to inhabit the same irreverence of his literary counterpart, but besides that I really am loving his actor's portrayal.
-The soldier in white at the hospital actually speaking. Somehow, that defeats his entire presence.
Things I am pleased with:
-The lighting and coloring in the scenes, it's so pretty to look at
-The first episode had some hilarious moments that came straight from the book
-Yossarian! Casting directors chose a great actor for the part.
-The fact that this series exists in the first place. :P
This probably seems like I dislike the series, but I'm still willing to watch it. I just hope they kept at least one scene that I mentioned above.
