I did what I was trying not to do and started watching gameplay footage of the original Red Dead Redemption. Now I'm falling in love with John Marston. I love him so much that I drew his portrait, and I can't say I did that for Arthur. All it took was hearing him laugh- he never laughed in RDR2, at least not in the playthrough I saw- and suddenly I was a goner. But just like how it was with Arthur Morgan, I know that this isn't going to end well, so basically I'm going to sue the folks who made both games for breaking my heart twice. (Though John is more on the level of "my precious trash son," whereas I just love Arthur in every way possible.)

I've also been entertaining myself by watching comparison clips of side missions in RDR2 done during the main story, when the player character is Arthur, and during the free-roam post-game, when the player character is John. Most of their lines are exactly the same from what I've seen, but there are some funny/adorable changes that I enjoyed, such as this exchange with a scientist during an experiment:

John/Arthur, looking at a little metal contraption floating on the water: What's this toy about?
Scientist: It is not a toy! It's a demonstration of my genius!
John, confused: Huh? A toy boat?
Arthur, brightening in realization: Ahhh, it's a toy boat! :D

Arthur then gets excited controlling it using a radio remote ("it's really doing what I tell it to!!"), whereas John is just silent the whole time. It's so amusing how the dialogue differs to better fit their character. There was another exchange with a beggar who asks for money and then asks if he can get a hug, and while Arthur's dialogue differs between a harsh "NO" and *sigh* "fine, just make it quick," John's automatic reaction is "Whoa! I... I got a woman!" Oh, John

Anyway because I'm so deep into this interest right now, I haven't been able to catch up on Live from Here for a bit. I missed the broadcast last night because I was at work, and I still need to finish listening to the previous broadcast. They had some amazing musicians on last week, including Death Cab For Cutie, who I always assumed were an emo band and I was pleasantly mistaken.

Right now I'm trying to work out the possibility of seeing a Live from Here broadcast/performance in person. I've got it worked out for the most part- there's a broadcast in NYC on a weekend in April, and on the day following that there's a folk music jam at a library where I used to work when I lived there. Then I'd like to stay the rest of the week to visit friends because I miss them very much. Problem is... that exact weekend is my mother's birthday, and that's the only date I can come up when the broadcast and folk jam would coincide. To be a good daughter or to treat myself? Hmmm.

(As a matter of fact, my mother's birthday is the same day as Chris Thile's wife's birthday. I learned this from last year's broadcast, not because I'm a creeper... okay, maybe I'm a little of that too... but it's not my fault that Thile gives away so much revealing information in his lyrics, lol.)
