Jun. 16th, 2020 08:14 pmI know it doesn't matter because shit, there's so much more going on in the world that taking a radio program off the air is the least of anyone's concerns, but I really want to do something to benefit American Public Media, especially since I had set my sights on working there for so long. I don't know what to do, though. My first idea is to stage a Live from Here-style show of my own, featuring several local artists as the musical/spoken word guests and playing a few songs myself in between their acts, and livestream it all, but livestreams don't raise money. My second idea is to release a song I wrote as a sort of tribute to LFH/Chris Thile as a single and all proceeds from people buying it will benefit American Public Media. My third idea is to just make a birthday fundraiser on Facebook this month where all proceeds go to APM, but I just don't think many people will contribute.
I'm pretty sure I'll end up going with the second option- just need to get the bass and violin parts recorded, and then talk to my producer about mixing/mastering it as quickly as possible, and THEN... It'll be a surprise early release from my record.
Also, people who are blaming American Public Media are both right and wrong. Yes, APM cancelled the show. NO, you shouldn't feel angry and call it a senseless decision because they literally weren't making enough revenue from it, they had to cut 28 employees goddammit! That's not something they WANTED to do! Live from Here is a LIVE show and most revenue was generated by ticket sales (as with anything in the music industry nowadays- touring sustains all musicians), and though they could easily make #livefromhome shows, no matter how many people are listening, it's not going to line their pockets. That's the way the world works, and it's depressing and it's bullshit but it's true. I hope people are sensible enough to support APM at this time and give them what they can, because you don't want them to go out of business entirely- they still produce content, LFH was just too expensive to keep going.
