May. 16th, 2020 06:24 pmDamn... all week I was excited for the new Live from Here episode airing tonight, because I really needed it to lift my spirits after all that I've been through this week, and then I got so caught up in working on a fic that I missed the pre-show on Instagram (which has become another highlight of Saturdays if you ask me, it's Chris Thile taking requests on Instagram live and generally being the beautiful human being that he is) and also the first twenty minutes of the program. I tuned back in and heard the creative director, Bodine Boling, conducting an interview, which is a first- we've mostly just heard her say "And we are live from here!" and read the credits during each show, so I liked that they're giving her a voice. Then Chris Thile just dropped a ton of bombshells in an innocuous little song introduction, by first actually acknowledging his first marriage, which he never mentions (and which informed the writing of his four-movement piece for bluegrass band, which informed the forming of Punch Brothers- he initially formed the band to play this piece, and they ended up playing together so well that they became a real band- well, four of them did, anyway; they had to find a new bass player after the first album), then mentioning not only did he grab drinks with one of the members of Vulfpeck (I honestly don't know that band very well but I still dig the fact that Chris is friendly with them), but that band member also attended a Punch Brothers show back in 2009, AND THEN he casually dropped a mention of a "Punch Brothers vault," which I know was tongue in cheek but still, the fact that they have crystal-clear audio of a 2009 show is EXCITING TO ME!!!
Also, this is the first time the segment "Tom Papa: Out In America" has truly been relatable to me, on the deepest level. Tom's shtick is saying "Have you ever [insert bizarre statement]? I have," and this is the first time that I can actually say yes, I HAVE.
