Dec. 30th, 2022 08:01 pmI’m reading Ronnie Spector’s autobiography for the second time, and I gotta say. It is driving me INSANE reading about her relationship with Phil Spector and how she ignored every single red flag. Even when he yells at her for having gone out to get lunch with another man, when he calls her every single night while she’s on tour and asks her to leave the phone off the hook so he knows she’s sleeping alone, when he has an intercom system installed in every room of his house so he can get in touch with her at all times and then barges in on her while she’s taking a bath because he called her on the intercom and she didn’t hear it over the sound of the water running… Throughout all that, Ronnie says, “I figured Phil’s possessiveness was just his way of letting him know that he loved me, so I let him play his little games.” ARRRRRRGGGHHH! Then she sees his office for the first time, which is covered wall to wall in pictures of her- and not even just professional photos of her, or photos they took together, but photos of her EATING AND SLEEPING too… I would have run for the hills, oh my god. And this is all BEFORE they got married, and I haven’t gotten to that part of the book yet, but already I want to jump into the book and grab Ronnie and get her out of there, so I can only imagine how I’ll feel once they actually get married and the nightmare REALLY starts.
Also, this version of the book has an updated introduction and afterward, which is different from the version I read, and both have some unintentionally chilling moments. In the introduction, which was written by Keith Richards, he says “Ronnie, I just love her around. And I’d like her to hang in for as long as possible. Like me.” That was written in September 2021. The afterward was written in November 2021 and has Ronnie saying “Jonathan and I are coming up on forty years of marriage,” which I think was supposed to be in February 2022. Then Ronnie died in January 2022… I keep forgetting that happened this year, it already feels like so long ago. I still regret that I never got to see her live, but I’m so glad that she was happy and enjoying herself up to that day (as the afterward reveals). Still, what awful timing for an updated version of the book to come out…
