Sooooooo did I ever go down a rabbit hole tonight... As I was poking around looking for various versions of David Bowie's "Five Years" (which at that point I still wanted to cover), I found one by... Gaby Moreno?! I first heard of Gaby when she appeared as a duet partner on Live from Here (ha, of COURSE it was LFH that introduced me), and since then I've been so pleasantly surprised whenever she randomly pops up... I never followed her career closely but it turns out she's done a lot of stuff I'd never known about. Anyway, here's her version of "Five Years:"

I had to pick my jaw off the floor and put it back on my face after hearing this, because not only was I impressed that she actually pulled off the screaming at the end (I wouldn't dare to even attempt it if I do end up covering the song), but she held a note without breathing for 17 WHOLE SECONDS... That's it, I'm done, not going to bother covering this song anymore, and while I'm at it, might as well tear out my vocal cords! (I kid. I kid.)

So after that, I remembered that I had a playlist saved on YouTube that I'd never actually given the time of day, and I figured it was now the time of night... I jumped into the "Gaby Moreno and Friends" playlist, and found this beautiful rendition of the song "Cucurrucucu Paloma," featuring another well-known Guatemalan who dabbles in music...

Oscar Isaac! The funny thing is, I had heard them each sing this song separately before, but never together. Her vibrato is so rich, and his falsetto so gorgeous. Ahhhhhhhhhh *sigh of bliss*

If you want to hear Gaby playing around with another actor-turned-musician, here's her rendition of the song that I first learned as "Why Don't You Do Right?," but she sings the original lyrics and uses the original title, "Weed Smoker's Dream."

Oh yeah, and Hugh Laurie is the pianist on this recording. He ain't bad, I guess, but I just love Gaby's voice...

So we've heard Gaby sing a few songs written by other people. Has she ever written anything herself? Glad you asked!!

Let me quickly get my squee-ing out of the way (Chris is singing backup vocals in a LOVELY falsetto!!! <3)... and now let's launch into some more squee-ing. Isn't this melody so PERFECT?? And the lyrics... !!!! As a matter of fact, I love the melody in this song so much that I accidentally stole parts of it for a song I wrote. Oops. It's not enough to get me sued, though, so I think I'm good.

Finally... I just need to post this, it's one of my go-to Blues-Be-Gone songs and it was the first time that I ever heard this song and had it stick in my brain (I'd heard this song before, as it was written for a somewhat quirky animated film called The Point which my dad showed me as a kid, but I had completely forgotten about its existence until it closed an episode of Live from Here). And boy, I need my blues to be gone after THIS week:

(Allow me one quibble, though- it is REALLY pronounced "Nill-son?" I always thought it was "Neel-son." I'm open to be corrected if I'm wrong, but... Should we call you Chris Thigh-ull now, Mr. Thile? :P )

Anyway, wow, I'm happy I went down that rabbit hole. Gaby Moreno is such an amazing vocalist. I'm really going to have to listen to some of her albums now (I think she just put one out this year??). Seeing her live this summer at a festival was really nice, too. She seems like a lovely person.
