Sep. 27th, 2022 10:43 amI just did a thing that I was afraid of doing and looked up the Coldplay album Mylo Xyloto. As I've established before, Mylo Xyloto is a major part of my Concept Album Multiverse, and the characters from the album feature heavily in both of my stories that take place in this universe. However, I never actually looked up the actual story that the album is supposed to tell (which is revealed through a comic book tie-in), instead interpreting it from what comes to mind when I listen to the album. And, well. My interpretation of the album is apparently NOTHING like the actual story. For starters, the story doesn't take place on Earth. And Mylo Xyloto is one character, not two- although I think that was changed for the comics, because I remember when the album came out, the band said that it was a story about two lovers named Mylo and Xyloto. (Although apparently I got that wrong too, because apparently Mylo is supposed to be the boy and Xyloto is supposed to be the girl...)
Anyway. I've just decided I'm going to ignore the comics completely, because I swear, you would not be able to tell any of those details if you just listened to the album (which probably means it fails as a concept album, but hey, there's still a narrative to it- it's just that the ultra-specific narrative that the band was envisioning doesn't come across in the music). So, that means that there's really only one concept album in my project that I'm interpreting exactly the way it was intended: The Wall. I'm taking a few small liberties with Ziggy Stardust, for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway I'm setting the narrative of SF: ALS as taking place before the events of that album, which means I'm using Rael as a character but am not referring to any of his experiences as they're still to come when SF: ALS takes place; for American Idiot, I'm ignoring the musical which expands upon the narrative; and for Mylo Xyloto, I'm just straight-up ignoring anything that's not outright stated in the lyrics. I need to make a post about the process of adapting these narratives, because I'm finding it to be an interesting process (and it really does feel more like an adaptation in some cases than a fanfiction), but that can wait for another time.
