between_time_and_42So, while I was still reeling from Better Call Saul last night, I decided to watch the first episode of the new season of Barry...
HAHAHAHAHAHA I thought it was wild that BCS killed off Nacho three episodes in, and now Barry has Barry & Gene facing off one episode in, which I thought would happen at least midway through the season!! Whaaaaaatt???
First of all: ask and ye shall receive, Cristobal/NoHo Hank is CANON! I'm honestly so happy they went there and it wasn't played as a joke. Hank getting in the shower with Cristobal, the two of them cuddling in bed together, Cristobal using a pet name and asking if Hank wants any tea... That was so heartwarming. The healthiness of their relationship in comparison to the dysfunction junction that is Sally/Barry is pretty funny, too. Who knew that a Chechen mobster and a Bolivian drug runner could find a purer love than two LA actors- one of whom is secretly a hitman?
(Also this randomly gave me a nice thought: NoHo Hank from Barry and Darius from Atlanta need to meet and have a conversation. I'd pay to watch that. Oh, and also, as some have been saying: this means Hank is truly 50/50 with Cristobal now!)
Okay, since I mentioned it: Barry & Sally. Wow, their relationship is going even further down the toilet and neither of them even realize it. At least Barry THOUGHT he loved Sally in the previous seasons... now it seems like he's only going through the motions of being in a relationship. His head and his heart are both in a very dark place right now. And Sally, being her shallow, self-absorbed self, has no idea what's going on with him, so busy she is with her new TV show that she's writing/producing/acting in. It looks like she's got more on her plate than she would like to have, but at the same time, this is all she ever wanted, so she can't give it up. It disturbed me how rehearsed their interactions were- how Sally tells Barry to get her flowers but don't stay for lunch, and then Barry shows up on set with the flowers and he makes an excuse so he won't have to stay for lunch and it just felt like a scene they were acting out, like they're both actors and now they're even acting in their personal life. (The tracking shot through Sally's set was awesome, and also felt very real and true to life! Bill Hader had proven himself to be a great director...)
Barry's hallucinations are VERY worrying. He's in such a dark place. And I can't believe he thought that doing more hits would help give him a purpose. So basically he was full of shit every time he talked about wanting to leave behind the hitman life? I guess Gene's acting class shutting down did a number on him... but why wouldn't he try to search for more acting jobs? Was the end of season 2 really him embracing the darkness within him and deciding he had to keep killing, there was no other way for him? I thought the massive shoot-out was all about Fuches...
Speaking of Fuches. I can't wait to see more of him in this season. He's the character you love to hate. And Stephen Root is a comedy king! I understood why NoHo Hank put the police onto Fuches, but I was surprised that he didn't rat out Barry. Even when Barry came to him in this episode and he very firmly told him to leave and that he hadn't forgiven him, he's still protecting Barry. Interesting. Maybe he's just afraid of him, after seeing what he can do.
Sally was terrible to Natalie. Her selfishness has been turned up to 11 this season. And yet I root for her over... pretty much everyone else except for Hank & Cristobal, since she at least isn't a criminal...
And finally. I cannot BELIEVE Barry and Gene's confrontation happened in this episode!!! I thought we'd have to wait half a season to see it, and I thought for SURE that Gene was going to die. I still think he's going to die this season, though... I have NO IDEA what Barry thinks will make Gene forgive him but I can't wait to find out.
One last note: The note from Rip Torn called Gene "Couscous" and I love everything about that.
