Corkboard!!!!! and commissions!
Apr. 13th, 2022 07:08 amJust gonna drop this post here before I run off to work today:
I finally out the finishing touches on my new room, which includes hanging up my corkboard!! I don’t know why I’m so excited about this but I am. Here it is:

There’s a bunch of different things on this! The musician postcards I mentioned (the Sparks one came from an order of one of their records that shipped late, so they included some extra goodies to make up for it… the I’m With Her one (with the three ladies) came from a record of theirs I bought when I went to see them live, the David Byrne one (black and white) was sent to me by my mother when I was away at camp in high school, and the Chris Thile/Live From Here one was sent to thank me for joining LFH’s fan club, a week or so after the show had been cancelled), some Kingsman fanart (I know Kadeart on tumblr did the one with the gang in fancy outfits, but I don’t know who did the Merlahad portraits, unfortunately…), and all the postcards one of my dearest friends has sent me over the years (she’s also the one who sent me the Kingsman art). And… my art commissions from last year!
Here they are in all their glory:

Russell Mael & Alex Kapranos at Lollapalooza Berlin, 2015. Art by Leirin. I found them through the Sparks fandom and wanted to commission them to do a certain idea I had, but couldn’t pull off due to my poor drawing skills, and as it so happened I asked them about it right on the day they opened commissions. I changed my commission after reading their guidelines, but they were still happy to do both, so I also ended up with…

A Balls-era Sparks clock! When I first heard Sparks’ album Balls, I noticed that much of the backing tracks were built around the keyboard, and I imagined that to play them live, there would have to be multiple Ron’s (or… turns out you can always pre-record parts, which is what they ended up doing during that era). That called to mind a line from their song “Beat the Clock,” which made me suddenly want to draw a Sparks clock, but I couldn’t do justice to it, so… here we are with what was probably a VERY random art commission (but I love how it turned out!).
Leirin has become one of my favorite artists in general, and I would link to their site except I think they’re giving it an overhaul currently, but anyway their work is so bright and beautiful and precious and I can’t wait to see what they make in the future!
The other artist I commissioned is also a Sparks fan, but the first commission I asked for was not Sparks-related- rather, something I’ve wanted for a very long time…

This is one of my OCs, Noel Bryden, who I first created and wrote about in 2017 for my Kingsman fic Prelude to Knighthood. He was going to be in the sequel, As the Shining Light, and I even started working on a proper origin story for him, but due to my editor being sidetracked by Life and my struggle with doing research, neither of those stories ever got posted (although I still really want to edit As the Shining Light someday…). Anyway, the artist is Churippu/Chulip Art, and I didn’t even tell them Noel was from a Kingsman fic but it still came out looking VERY Kingsman which in turn makes me very happy. (Noel’s dog is named Delilah btw. She’s a good girl)
Finally… although I really love all the other commissions, I think this one might have been my favorite:

Also by Churippu, a Sparks outfit swap! Sparks performed on SNL in the 80’s and Russell wore a glorious pink sparkly suit. I love that performance, but I always wondered what Ron would look like in the suit… I guess I don’t have to wonder now. 😂
