Nov. 19th, 2021 08:24 amI was talking to someone in the Punch Brothers Facebook fan group who said they’re not excited for the upcoming album because everything that’s come out so far sounds so overproduced… and I’m just wondering how the hell a BLUEGRASS BAND is supposed to be “overproduced.” At any rate, the production sounds a lot more natural than anything from Who’s Feeling Young Now…
Another criticism was that the arrangements of the songs so far are unnecessarily unconventional, like putting a regular 4/4 song in 5 and slowing the tempo of another one and adding bass and fiddle solos. That’s fair. But I did think it was funny because this is maybe the closest Punch Brothers have ever sounded to being a typical, conventional bluegrass band. I especially thought the way they performed their solos on the newest single release sounded like they were holding themselves back from going too experimental, out of respect for Tony Rice.
I listened to the original album, Church Street Blues by Tony Rice, yesterday in preparation for when Punch Brothers’ take on the album comes out. It is VERY good. So many solid tunes. I for one can’t WAIT to hear Punch Brothers tackle “Pride of Man” and “Streets of London.” Not to mention one of the best folk songs ever (not a traditional, though)- “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald!”
