BARRY! *horns blare*
May. 2nd, 2022 08:25 pmI just watched the new episode and oh my god, that was fucked up beyond belief.
First off. It sucks that we had one episode to enjoy Hank/Christobal before Christobal goes and breaks Hank's heart!!! I mean, at least he was only doing it to keep Hank safe and not because he had stopped having feelings for him, but I'm so upset about this. Seriously, TV show? You give us these lovely healthy partners and now, as I'd feared they would, you separate them to cause drama?? I feel like this will somehow lead Hank back to working with Barry. (Also, I do like that they didn't have to show them kissing to show that they were in a relationship... but I would have loved to see just one kiss between them! I guess there might still be time, I don't foresee them being broken up forever...)
It never occurred to me that Hank and Christobal would have to hide their relationship. I forgot that the Chechens and the Bolivians might no longer be allies at this point (I really, really need to rewatch season 2 because I forgot some important plot points....). And also, I've heard that Chechnya, IRL, is an extremely homophobic area, so maybe Hank is hiding his entire sexuality from his comrades, which makes me sad. I just want him and Christobal to be free and happy together. I don't know what's going to happen but I still stand by the opinion that they deserve a happy ending more than anyone else (also Sally and Gene, but I still feel like Gene's going to die this season).
So, the fucked-up parts- holy SHIT Barry is totally off the rails. I feel like Bill Hader saw everyone praising the character and going "awww" and ignoring the fact that Barry is a cold-blooded killer, and went "I know a way to fix this..." Like, it seems like such a huge jump forward from his character in season 2. Think back to the scene where he was eaten alive by guilt over having killed a parent, and how he always kept insisting he only kills "bad guys..." And now he's threatening Cousineau's son and grandson to keep him in line. What the fuck. Maybe having Fuches in his life was actually GOOD for him, because Fuches would keep him on task and give him a purpose, even if the tasks were assigned murders. I'm still confused as to why he didn't take the part in the Swim Instructors movie- was that shootout at the end of season 2 Barry's way of confessing that it was no use trying to pursue his dreams and he might as well stick to what he's good at? I don't know, but I do know one thing- Sally needs to GET. OUT. I can't believe Barry screamed at her like that, I thought for sure Sally was the one person he would never, ever hurt. She's trapped in an abusive relationship all over again- imagine how much she'll probably hate herself for that once she realizes it. The scene where she was putting Barry's dinner on the table made me nervous, it seemed like she was really insistent on setting the table before he came home and making it look nice because she was worried about how he would react if it wasn't perfect. It was also so sad that only one person on set seemed to want to do something to help her after witnessing Barry's outburst (and also, that one person was SO CUTE, omg her hair, I want a haircut like that).
Barry trying to patch things up with Gene by getting him a part in a series was SO perfectly Hollywood. And the way he told him he loved him, and asked him to say it back... HELLO, RED FLAGS. This man is a walking disaster who needs therapy, stat. Though I don't know how much therapy would help at this point.
Parts I laughed at- the Chechens on the Hollywood tour, the couple breaking up because "you have too many dogs," Natalie being Sally's unnecessary yes-woman.
I gotta say, I'm not really liking the vibe of season 3 so far, but we're only two episodes in so I'll give it time. Now... off to watch Better Call Saul as it airs tonight.
EDIT: nvm, I'm not really feeling BCS tonight after watching Barry, I'll have to catch up by pirating it the way I just pirated Barry. (I have my ways and they're good ways.)
