Dec. 29th, 2020 08:35 pmI started watching Schitt's Creek since everyone and their mother was talking about it for a few solid weeks (including my own mother), and also I just did a marathon of Christopher Guest's movies and I needed more Catherine O'Hara in my life (plus Eugene Levy). A lot of people mentioned how the characters are very unlikeable in the first season, but I honestly don't find them unlikeable, I just don't really have any feelings towards them. I actually find them all a little more sympathetic than I expected (except maybe Alexis, she's super stuck up and unrelatable). Johnny is probably the most down to earth one (and that's a VERY loose definition of "down to earth), and Eugene Levy's facial expressions fucking KILL me. David feels like such a fully realized character, I feel like Dan Levy added so many quirks and unspoken backstory to his performance somehow. The way he talks sometimes reminds me so much of how some people I know talk and behave. Moira is my favorite at the moment, though. Not only because Catherine O'Hara is a queen/comedy goddess, but her character is so fun to watch. Also, Chris Elliot is there and he's a riot. I need to watch more stuff he's been in (I only know him mainly from this wacked-out sitcom called Get a Life, of which I remember very little but it was certainly a trip).
Mainly, though, what's good about this show is the fact that all the side characters feel so REAL to me. They act about as appropriately as anyone would around this weird family. Plus there's a lot of subtle action in the background of scenes, which I always find entertaining and it's also pretty true to life.
Sitcoms just make me happy, man. I love coming home from work and watching a few episodes of one, then writing a bit before bed. My life has pretty much been that of a hermit lately (work, home, every other Friday I meet some friends in a safe, socially-distant environment, weekends I volunteer doing mutual aid and maybe make a shopping trip or go for a walk), and it's really working for me.
Also, for Christmas I got a massive, warm robe, and I have not taken that thing off once, I swear to god.
