So earlier today I was made aware of a remake of my favorite movie musical (and favorite musical), Little Shop of Horrors, which was apparently announced back in January (but presumably it hasn't gone into production yet). Apparently it will star:

Taron Egerton as Seymour Krelborn

Billy Porter as Audrey Two (voice)

Scarlett Johansson as Audrey Fulquard

Chris Evans as Orin Scrivello

And ummmmmmmm. Ummmmmmmmm.

Okay, I get that Taron Egerton can sing (and sing well, at that), but I dunno, I think of him as too hunky and pretty-boy for the role of nerdy little Seymour. Yeah, Taron has been known to take on less masculine/typically attractive roles (see: Eddie the Eagle), but I seriously can't picture him as Seymour, at all.

Billy Porter's the only one I feel kind of okay about- I'm not familiar with his work, but hey he's a musician who's sung on Broadway so that can't possible be a misstep. Scarlett Johansson, though? For one thing, based on what I've heard from her singing, there's no way she can hit all the notes required of Audrey (though unlike some purists, I really don't mind if they change the keys for her), and I just really don't care for her as an actress. UGH. That's not as bad as Chris Evans though. I think his hunkiness will work for role, unlike Taron, but I just can't picture him putting the right balance of wickedness/scumminess and zany humor into Orin. I look at that guy and all I see is a teddy bear. And I can't picture him singing well, either. (Though I should say, I didn't care for Steve Martin in the original movie so maybe this will end up being an improvement?)

Bottom line, though: why remake it at all???? The original movie from the 80's still holds up, in my opinion. Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene are the perfect Audrey & Seymour (seriously, can you picture Taron Egerton reaching the same level of nerdiness as Rick Moranis does?? I can't. Not to mention Ellen Greene, as campy and melodramatic as some might find her, IS Audrey, and her casting I believe is one reason why the movie worked as well as it did. She's the original Audrey and absolutely the best. She owns that role. No one else can come close. Yes, I am biased, no I don't care). And what are they going to do for the plant, build another impressive puppet? Or take the easy way out and use CGI? Finally, what about the ending? As unfortunate as it is, the stage musical's original ending just doesn't translate to the screen, so are they going to use the movie's happy ending? Ahhhhhh. I am really not looking forward to this if it moves forward. What the heck were those casting directors thinking. (This is what they were thinking, probably: $$$$$)
