Apr. 24th, 2022 07:27 pmI'm finishing up my firs short story spin-off from my NaNoWriMo novel, and I'm cracking up because I just realized this:
Nanci and Peter have their own little arc going on in the novel, which we meet them in the middle of and which gets resolved off-page, that has NOTHING to do with Paul. At all. Even though Paul is the protagonist/narrator of the novel, you could take him out of the novel and have a perfectly fine story told from beginning to end, except the ending would be different. Of course Peter has a lot of interactions with Paul in the story, but writing from Nanci's POV made me realize how hilarious it is that from her perspective, Paul is just her boyfriend's brother who hangs around with her from time to time, and then suddenly at the end, what happens is completely centered around Paul and that probably came absolutely out of NOWHERE. I'm not even frustrated or annoyed or anything, I just think this is hilarious. Like, they managed to solve their problems without any help from Paul and then he goes and fucks everything up. It's so interesting to see how dependent on the POV character the storyline is... like, Paul is OBSESSING over how Peter gets EVERYTHING handed to him, and how badly he wishes Nanci would love him (but does he really love Nanci, or does he love a version of her that he's created in his mind? Or maybe he just wants her because Peter is with her?), but Peter has no idea Paul resents him so much, and Nanci isn't aware of any kind of tension existing between them, since she has enough problems of her own to deal with.
Anyway, the story is almost done (I need to write one final conversation between Peter & Nanci), but unfortunately I can't share it yet because almost everything in it would spoil the novel. After that, I'm going to write the short story about Peter and Paul when they were younger (Peter at 18 and Paul at 21), and since that takes place long before canon, I'll be able to share that one!
